Seven words of Jesus on the Cross

7words-jesus-goodfriday-holyfriday

THE FIRST WORD

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do”
The first word of Jesus from the cross is a word of forgiveness. So, "we confess our sins to him, sure god will definitely forgive us our sins and cleanse all our wickedness". In Bible john also written his first letter (1 John 1:9). God has removed any kind of sins from east is from the west (Ps 103:13).

THE SECOND WORD

“Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise”
As Jesus hung on the cross, he was mocked by the soldiers. One criminal after speaking up for Jesus, he cried out, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom"(v.42), Jesus replied to the criminal that "I assure you, today you will be with me in Paradise"(v.43). Paradise means garden in the Greek word.

THE THIRD WORD

Jesus said to his mother: ”Woman, this is your son.” Then he said for the discipline:”This is your mother”
As Jesus was in the cross and feeling desperately dying, his mother was among those who had remained with him. Most the male disciples had fled, with the exception of one whom the fourth Gospel calls "the disciple he loved" We can't be exactly sure of the identity of this beloved disciple, though many interpreters believe he is John, who is also the one behind the writing of this Gospel.

THE FOURTH WORD

“My god, my god, why have you forsaken me?”
In this, Jesus found a way to express the cry from his heart: why god has abandoned him? Why did his father turn his back on Jesus in his moment of greatest agony?

THE FIFTH WORD

“I thirst”
Jesus felt thirsty when he is being crucified.  He had lost all his fluids on his body and his blood and sweat. He requested to them for something to drink and they gave Jesus a "sour wine"(v.29), it is a cheap beverage.

THE SIXTH WORD

They put a sponge soaked in wine on a spring of hyssop, and put it up to his mouth.  When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished;” and he bowed his head and handed over the spirit.
When Jesus said it is finished," definitely he was expressing relief that his suffering was over. "it is finished” meant, in part, "This is finally done!". Jesus had accomplished his mission and thus opening up the way for all to live under the rein of god.

THE SEVENTH WORD

Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “father into your hands I commend my spirit.”
At last the seventh word from Jesus is "Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands".  On an obvious level, Jesus had put his hands towards his Heavenly Father. That means "whatever happens to me after I die is your responsibility, Father."
